8 Essentials for the Modern Kitchen

It’s easy to be swayed and entranced by (quite literally) the shiny new tool for your kitchen. No matter where you look, there seems to be new must-have tools coming up every day.

And yet, all that you need to create delicious, heartwarming and memorable meals can be boiled down to some standard, tried-and-true products. Of course, you can still indulge and buy an extra gadget here and there, but here’s a list of items you can continually rely on for making meals in your own home.

1. Food Processor

Between this and the next item, these are the end-all-be-alls of versatility in the kitchen. A quality food processor can help you slice, mince, chop, mix and even make purees, and you’ll find it in recipes ranging from soups to finely baked desserts.

2. Stand Mixer

Perhaps the most “innovative” item on the list is the stand mixer. While this was definitely a shiny new toy once upon a time, it has become a mainstay in the modern kitchen because of how much it helps reduce work related to baking and preparing doughs and other baked goods. Without one, baking would still be a highly involved, daylong chore.

3. Oven Safe Baking Dish

Having a conveniently sized (9×13”, for example) baking dish that you can bring from oven to table is also a must-have in the kitchen. You really only need one good one – especially if it's decorative and pretty – to last you through the different pilafs, lasagnas, stews and pies you’d be looking to make.

4. Saucepot

As we move to the stove and to active cooking, one of the handiest items will surprisingly be your saucepot. You would be surprised how helpful one of these will be, both for when you quickly need to whip up a sauce or when you’re cooking for only 1-2 people.

5. Cast Iron Skillet

The emphasis here is on the cast iron, which helps distribute and retain heat evenly and in a way that makes for controlled stovetop cooking. It does help as well that cast iron pans can bake in the oven, but just be careful for the handle when taking it out!

6. Multi-Purpose Cutting Board

Despite the name, the right type of cutting board also doubles as a presentation piece for when you’re serving finished plates. Of course, there is the chopping, julienning, dicing, mincing and more you’ll need to do, but a cutting board (see examples here) that you can rely on as both serveware and cookware is invaluable.

7. Chef Knife

Perhaps the most unheralded and underappreciated of the bunch is a very solid, well made chef’s knife. Ideally you have one that’s a full tang blade – meaning it’s made out of one singular piece of steel – in order to give you maximum control over your highly precise, professional cuts.

8. Slow Cooker

As far as ease and convenience go, a slow cooker is the creme de la creme particularly when it comes to making chilis, stews and any other dishes that require long cooking times. SImply add your ingredients together, then set and forget your slow cooker until it’s done!

And So Much More

Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to properly stocking your kitchen with the cookware you need for all dishes and cuisines you’d like to make. Nevertheless, this is the starter set of tools that can get you 90% of the way there.

Bon appetit!
