Many of us want to live a long and vibrant life. Food is one of the most important tools. However, the science of eating has become more complicated than ever. Rebecca Katz, culinary nutrition pioneer and wellness authority, has provided us with a helpful and flavorful solution. In The Longevity Kitchen: Satisfying, Big-Flavor Recipes Featuring the Top 16 Age-Busting Power Foods Katz sheds light on the top sixteen foods proven to fight the most common chronic conditions in this collection of 125 whole-foods recipes.

Based on the most up-to-date nutritional and scientific research, Katz explains how consuming superfoods, such as asparagus, dark chocolate, coffee, olive oil and sweet potatoes can help build immunity, lower cholesterol, enhance memory, strengthen the heart and reduce your chances of developing many different types of diseases.

This cookbook is about more than the science. The Longevity Kitchen is packed with practical menu information along with full-page color photographs, cooking tips in Cook’s Notes and fun factoids in the Who Knew? section. And while it could read as a simple eating guide, Katz allows us a glimpse into her life, which portrays a salt of the Earth, humorous and endearing spirit. Each recipe begins with a story. Great anecdotal stories or fond memories of why the recipe was created along with an explanation of the health advantages of each main ingredient.

One of my favorite stories (and recipes) is the Roasted Asparagus Salad with Arugula and Hazelnuts. Told with joy and flavor, the story is a touching one of tailgates, asparagus and friendship accompanied by an easy-to-find ingredient recipe that’s delicious. Check it out for yourself on page 88.
