Bound in Ink

This week's prompt from Big Tent Poetry was pretty difficult for me. "This week’s prompt is to think of something you possess. What are your feelings about this possession? Do you possess it, or does it possess you?"

~for Christy and Michael

It bound us together for eternity.
Not a wedding band
that can be taken off
put in a jewelry box
pawned to pay the electric bill
or, as I once heard,
flushed down the toilet.

Not a solemn vow of friendship
that can be forgotten
an echo fading out on the breeze
dissipated over distance
or broken in angry snaps.

Ink.
Our friendship branded onto skin.
A promise that will not wash out
on a tidal wave of anger
or drown in the depths of an ocean.

I can't believe it was hard for you, the piece you wrote is wonderful!
I love "pawned to pay the electric bill"…

My husband and I got tattooed together the week of our wedding.  It is forever, like us.  🙂  I love this poem.  Thanks for sharing it.

I like the way you set aside the traditional physical and spoken symbols of forever attachment in favor of what for most in Western society is a relatively new arsenal of symbols. Love that you compare the permanence of symbols of permanence. Nice flow and "feel" to this poem. Nice!

Love it! Beautiful! I love the imagery.
And I love love love you (sorry, I know, this is the first time I visit your blog, and I'm already getting emotional 😉 ) for the link to Big Top Poetry. I just joined a creative writing workshop last week, and have been out of ideas on what to write. I have no problem coming up with blog posts, but my mind just isn't trained to see creative writing ideas when they come up. So thanks!

Thanks so much for stopping by! Big Tent Poetry is fantastic! Also, check out the Just Write Workshop here at Dishwater Dreams. I also have links to a lot of great writing prompt sites in the Find Me Elsewhere section.

WOW! I don't generally like tattoos (seen them on too many people who make them look bad) or poetry but this struck a chord with me! Truly beautiful!

Lindsey, Congratulations on blog of the day!  Happy to be there with you.
It's funny that I stumbled onto some of the poetry I wrote years ago when I was 'evolving' so to speak and posted my favorite one on my blog recently: http://zeroto60andbeyond.blogspot.com/2010/07/ode-to-pets.html
I doubt anyone will ever see the rest of it until I'm long gone!  Way too personal.
Nice job!
