Christians Against..Well Anything Really But Today It’s Nike

First let me say I am a Christian. I believe in the One True God. I believe Jesus died on the cross for my sins.

I do NOT believe that any of those above statements have anything to do with Nike.

I also don't think Christians should be against gay people, non-Christians, or really anything else. We should be FOR positive things like restoring hope, feeding the hungry, letting people know that they don't have to be eaten alive by this world.

I heard about this site today on Facebook – Christians Against Nike.

I really wanted to just reply to the link and start proclaiming the sillliness of the entire website. And not just because Craig Groeschel is my pastor. And not just because Kevin Durant plays for a team in my state. And not just because Sam Bradford is a Sooner just like me.

I decided not to be a troll and just rant on my own blog instead.

Here is the plain fact. Nike is just a word. It has no meaning until you give it meaning. Yes, Nike is the name of a Greek god. It is also just a word that means victory or conquest. I seriously doubt most people know that! I really want to ask this guy if he has pets and what their names are. How did you name your kids? Should we ban anything that has to do with Greek mythology?

Chaos – Since nothing can be named after Greek gods, everything must now be in perfect order.

Chronos – If we ban Chronos we have to ban all words that stem from his name, like chronological. Time can no longer be in order. This is going to make banning Chaos pretty impossible.

Oceanus – Ban the ocean.

Atlas – No more maps. No more GPS. All is lost.

Apollo – Sorry we now have to ban Dancing with the Stars, speed skating, Harlem, Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, Bill Paxon, Gary Sinese, Ron Howard, NASA, PBS, space travel, and the moon.

Olympus – While we are at it, these guys all live on Olympus, which the Olympics is named for, so just ban the Olympics. In fact, ban all sports. And cameras.

Is this specific to Greek gods? What about Roman gods? Ban the planets (Venus, Neptune, Jupiter, Pluto, Mercury, Saturn, Uranus). Ban love (Cupid). Ban Star Trek (Vulcan).

I really wish that people would drop all of the negative and focus on the positive. I'm pretty sure shoes and t-shirts aren't going to bring about the destruction of the world. And you know what else? If YOU don't like Nike, don't wear it.

If Gary Sinise is on the chopping block, I'm out! I can't even handle half of the groups/causes on FB these days. If people would spend a little more time focusing on the positive influence they could have in the world rather than tearing down the minutae in the name of their god, the world would be a much nicer place.

I am a liberal Christian who has been frustrated at other Christians so much that I have considered just ditching my religion. It is people like you who keep me involved in the church. So thanks for having logic.

You have to have logic and faith. I fully believe that you should be able to explain your faith, not just follow blindly. I think a lot pf people get caught up in the politics of church instead of focusing on their relationship with God.
