Finding the Right Workout: Weight Training vs. Yoga vs. Pilates

There are a plethora of options when choosing a workout regimen. So many, in fact, that it can be overwhelming to pick which is best for you. Just because a fitness video or class becomes the hot new thing, it doesn’t mean you will necessarily receive the best results possible by participating. Workouts produce individual results, and it is important to find the right workout for you, taking your body, personality and lifestyle into consideration. Picking a routine that you can relate to and enjoy will keep you engaged and on track with a consistent routine.

If you are independent…

Does the thought of exercising in front of people make you break-out into a sweat? Whether it’s a confidence issue, fear of judgment or something entirely different, many people prefer to keep their fitness routines within the comfort of their home. Luckily, there are a variety of electronic consoles, like the Wii, that have fitness components and accessories as well as at-home workout videos that can help you accomplish any workout goal. See some of the additional section below to help you decide which videos will work for you.

If you are social…

Are you one of the many women who requires a friend to accompany her to the bathroom when out on the town? Do you prefer a night out with the girls as opposed to a quite evening in with a good book? Fitness classes and workout groups may be your best bet when it comes to working out. From spin class to yoga, you are sure to find a class that will offer the perfect pairing of social engagement and physical endurance.

If you lack will power…

Some people, no matter how determined, just can’t seem to make it to the gym on their own. Adding a bit of accountability can be all the added motivation they need. For those lacking the personal strength to stick to individual workouts, look into hiring a trainer and setting regular appointments in advance. Besides the monetary loss, if you don’t show, you also have someone to answer to and admit that you did not do your workout for the day. Lack the financial means to hire a professional? Find a dedicated fitness friend and make them your gym buddy. Again, set regular dates and times to workouts you can keep each other accountable.

If you want to gain flexibility and mental clarity…

If you need a little mental and physical flexibility, yoga may be the answer. Yoga is considered a therapeutic activity as it is commonly used to find mental harmony and heal the body. It promotes relaxation, even in the most-stressful moments of life, and gives your body added flexibility. Conducting your exercise at home in a quiet and peaceful environment can be simple with easy-to-follow instructional videos that can lead you in the direction of your fitness goals.

If you want lean muscles and core strength…

Much like yoga, Pilates can help focus the mind, but instead of an emphasis on healing and relaxation, the focus is on making your body stronger both inside and out. With attention focused on breathing and utilization of the core, Pilates can isolate and work muscles to build stronger and leaner muscles. Plus, the focused breathing and core engagement will produce stronger central muscles. These exercises can be done from home as well, GaiamTV offers Pilates videos, including core challenge, weight loss and flat abs variations.

If you want to shed pounds and build muscle…

Most physical activity, paired with a healthy diet, will result in weight loss and stronger muscles, but if you want to see results quickly, focus on strength training or weightlifting. Weight training is specifically designed to show results in toned muscles and overall physique improvement.
