How to Reupholster Chairs

Reupholstering dining chairs is really pretty easy. I have never liked the fabric on my dining chairs. It was this weird golden brown something or other. Here's a lovely dining room before picture. You can see why it needs help.

I found this upholstery fabric I loved at Hobby Lobby for 30% off plus I had a 50% off one item coupon so fabric for all 4 chairs (I bought 2 yards) was a little less than $10. You don't have to use upholstery fabric. You can just use a cotton fabric. I have two little boys though and I wanted a more durable fabric.

Tools needed:

Flat head screw driver or tack puller – the tack puller works much better and costs about $5
Phillips head screw driver
Staple gun and staples

Start by taking off the entire seat of the chair. It is most likely attached with 4 screws.

Now we need to remove the old fabric. Take off the black backing and the fabric by removing all the staples. Save the black backing because we will put this back on later. There were quite a lot of staples in my chairs.

Using the old fabric as a guide, cut a new section of fabric and place it underneath the old cushion. Be careful to keep the wood and foam in place.

Because this was a striped pattern, I had to make sure it was lined up correctly. It is easier if you don't pick a pattern that has to be so straight!

Start going around the fabric stapling the new fabric into place. First place one staple on each long side to secure the fabric in place then go around the rest of the chair. For the corners, just work the fabric around until it is smooth on the corners before stapling.

Add the black backing on again with a few staples.

Reattach the seat to the chair.

And that's it. You are done! Unless you are me and decide that now you need to redo the dining table surface. But's that's another post.
