This is Why I Don't Watch the News

in Just Sayin'

Several years ago when Hubs was first starting to have anxiety problems, his doctor suggested that he stop watching the news for a month and see how he felt. His anxiety was greatly reduced and so not watching the news stuck. The only time we turn the news on around here is if there is a tornado.

I should have stuck to that.

Last night at the gym, I grabbed a treadmill where I usually like to be, right where I can people watch. Kickboxing Kitty was on her usual routine of texting while working out. The step class was going on behind me. The same muscleheads were doing the same exercises and making trips to the water fountain every 5 minutes. And CNN was on the television.

I made the mistake of starting to read the closed captioning. I was on a treadmill walking to nowhere and was just trying to entertain myself I guess. I won't do that again.

Kim Kardashian has a sex tape. Yes, and polar bears like the cold. She is embarassed though.

Teen hearing loss is on the rise in the US. Also, iPod sales are at an all time high. Go figure.

Omar Thornton. CNN reports that his mother said he had a gentle spirit and she had never seen him in a rage or angry before. On August 3, Thornton walked into the beer warehouse where he had just been fired from in Conn. He then shot and killed 8 people. Before killing himself, he called 911 and said he wished he could have gotten more of them. Reason? They were racist. Sounds like a very gentle spirit to me. (insert sarcasm here)

Shaquan Duley. This woman suffocated her two sons in a hotel room. One was 18 months old and the other was 2 years old. The she took her dead babies, put them in their car seats, drove 20 minutes to the Edisto River and dumped her car int he river. She told police the boys drowned in an accident. First problem with her story? She was completely dry. Stories of moms killing their children haunt me. Susan Smith. Andrea Yates. Dena Schlosser has caused me so many nightmares.

This story was a little different though.

Two year old, sweet, innocent, Devean. He fought back. That two year old baby had defensive wounds. There was evidence of a struggle in the hotel room. HE FOUGHT BACK. That little baby knew his mother was hurting him. He knew it was bad enough to fight back.

As I read that on that TV screen in the gym, I had to stop the treadmill. I was about to start bawling right there. I could barely breathe, and it wasn't from the workout.  I had to go get my own two year old from the gym daycare. I don't understand how any mother can hurt her children. I especially don't understand how a mother can kill her children.

This is why I don't watch the news. I can't handle it.

People do some really terrible things. I enjoy watching the news to keep up with what's going on in the world but reports like that make me cry as well :(

Ever since I had children, I can't watch the news. It makes me worry about all sorts of things. Too bad they don't have a "positive hour" for people like us ;) .

I am right there with you. Never watch the news, but like you, saw the cc while I was on the treadmill at the gym. Makes me sick.

Ugh, this is why I don't like watching the news either. Like you, I can't wrap my head around the idea of mothers hurting their kids – killing them. It's heartbreaking to hear about that boy, especially, who fought back but in the end still lost his life.
So sad. :(

I used to watch CNN at the gym from the treadmill, too. I can remember several times tearing up at the story and quickly switching my focus to watch the cooking show TV.  The news is depressing…I don't watch. I try to catch the big stories on the internet to avoid the horrific ones. If only they would focus more on the positive and inspiring stories and less on the tragedies.
