Motherhood can really do a number on your self image. From the frequent night wakings to dealing with body issues, it’s all too easy to lose that youthful resolve you used to have. Thankfully, with a little perspective and a lot of intention, there are some simple habits you can adopt right now to start feeling and looking younger.

1. Get More Sleep

It’s no secret that sleep does wonders for the human body. Sleep is essential for cellular renewal, mental clarity, immunity, and all-around repair and restoration, which is why it’s worth making sure you squeeze the recommended seven to nine hours of it into your busy schedule. After about six weeks of adopting this good habit, you should notice that you have more energy, a brighter complexion, and fewer dark circles under your eyes.

2. Reduce Alcohol Consumption

Stop drinking your calories with that nightly glass of Pinot after work. Replace this less-than-healthy habit with a tall glass of pH-balancing lemon water or a relaxing cup of chamomile tea to help you unwind. Instead of dehydrating yourself by drinking alcohol, you can hydrate your body, consume fewer calories, and improve sleep quality.

Alcohol consumption is proven to interfere with the restorative processes that typically occur during sleep, as well as reduce the essential first stage of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep.

3. Find a Way to Manage Stress

Not only will stress wreak havoc on your health in the long term, it also speeds up the aging process and can dramatically reduce your quality of life. Whether you’re stressing about work, the kids, finances, or anything else, now is the time to create a new habit to better manage toxic stress. For some, meditation is essential, while others swear by more physical outlets like boxing. It could also be something as simple as belting out your favorite music in the car on your daily commute. The key is to find a stress management technique that works for you and adopt it as a daily habit before stress gets the best of you.

4. Protect Your Skin

Gone are the days when you’d do anything to achieve a great tan outdoors. Now you know better. Between free radical damage and the skyrocketing rates of skin cancer, it’s never been more important to slather yourself in sunscreen daily. Avoid wrinkles, uneven skin tone, and other telltale signs of aging by protecting your body’s largest organ with SPF that includes UVA and UVB protection. And remember: Staying covered is the best kind of protection, so wear a hat and sunglasses when spending time enjoying the great outdoors. Shield the ultra-delicate skin around your eye area from sun damage by replacing the lenses in your sunglasses with polarized versions for maximum protection.

5. Adopt a Positive Outlook

No matter how much the world has shown you its darker side, commit to seeing the glass as half full and staying positive. After all, nothing is as youthful as a can-do attitude. And when all else fails, smile. Not only does smiling boost your mood, thanks to a release of serotonin, it also lifts the moods of those on the receiving end, which will help make it even easier to maintain a positive attitude.
