Rental Decorating – The Living Room Quandry

I have a design dilemma. Indecision. Isn't that really the cause of most design dilemmas?

I got this couch, which I love. Different pillows though.

The pillows are similar to this color.

I have elements I can't do anything about like this fireplace, the color of the walls and carpet, and the shape of the room. There is a fake wet bar, but that really deseres it's very own post later.

I recently got an entertainment center which is on the wall just to the left on the fireplace. The one with the plugs.

The room is coming together nicely. Except I have no idea what to do for a coffee table. The one I have to too long for the couch. And the wrong color, which I could easily change if it was the right size.

I am considering going basic with the LACK table form Ikea because it is a good size (30 3/4" square), highly functional, I can always hack it later, and it has the benefit of only costing only costs $30.

So the look would be something like this.

However I am not sure I want something quite like this. It may be too square and too heavy for the room. I also don't want glass. I can see Little Brother going straight though it within a week.

I also like these ideas.

Two small tables or nightstands. I think they would have to be pretty small though.

Crates are always a good, cheap option and have storage. But its hard to make them look classy and not shabby. I'm not all that into the shabby look.

A round table is a great option. I have looked for a round table and have found a lot of glass and a lot of highly decorative tables, but not really anything I like. This would most likely have to be a thrift store find and update.

Of course ottomans are also a great option. You lose the functionality of the table as a place to build legos or draw, but you have a nice soft place to put your feet.

One great thing about the LACK table is it would be fairly easy to turn it into a square ottoman.

So I need your help!

Square or round? Table or ottoman? Or something else entirely?

I think round…table or ottoman.

I'd say square.  I, too, have a big sectional and have a square table it fits the space nicely.  You may just keep looking if you think the Ikea table is too heavy.  Or you can buy the Ikea table live with it for a few days and return it if you don't like it (be sure to review their return policy); it might help point you in the direction you want to go.

Great ottomans! Where did you find the round one? I would love a link to the website. Thank you!

It was an image I found on Flickr. I never could find an original source where that specific one was sold but I figured I could make one like that fairly easily.
