The New Interest in Documentary Films – A Top 10 List

Netflix has sparked an entirely new interest in documentaries. There are tons of documentaries on Netflix that are free to view and we have found some really great ones!

1. Finding Elmo – Despite the recent bad press surrounding Kevin Clash, this is a great watch. Kevin recounts his experience from making his own puppets as a child to meeting Jim Henson to turning Elmo into the most beloved Muppet of all time.

2. Between the Folds – This is a really interesting look at the past, present, and future of origami. It shows the connecten between art, music, math, and science. This documentary has everything from applications towards finding cures for diseases, breathtakingly detailed sculpture, and even a postmodern look of origami with just a single fold.

3. Whore's Glory – This documentary looks at the life of prostitutes in Thailand, Bangladesh, and Mexico. Obviously not kids friendly, but very eye opening as to the lives of these girls in different countries. Heartbreaking.

4. Lost Angels – The true story behind skid row in Los Angeles. You will probably be surprised at what the reality is.

5. Russia's Toughest Prisons – Ever what what a Siberian prison is really like?

6. Brother's Keeper – This is actually a heartwarming tale of murder involving the Ward brothers, who are illiterate farmer's who have spent their entire lives together in a small shack.

7. After Innocence – A look at what happens after someone has spent years, even decades, in prison then exonerated by DNA evidence.

8. Murder by Proxy – This film looks at the term "going postal" and how the spree killer was born.

9. First Position – A look at 5 ballet dancers as they prepare for a major competition.

10. Bones Brigade – This documentary follows six teenagers who formed a skateboarding team in the 1980s, revitalizing the sport and becoming its top athletes.
